Not too long ago, I made a passing comment from the pulpit about reading a book by those who have long-sense passed before us (i.e., dead people). In particular, I had Jonathan Edwards’ Religious Affections in mind. Although not an easy book, I believe it has great potential to spur us on to holy affections in our Christian walks.

They thought that their candidate was going to win and they were going to be in the cabinet, and when they saw the nails going into the hands and the feet and the spear going into the side, they believed those wounds had destroyed their lives. And now Jesus is showing them that in his resurrected body his scars are still there. Why is this important?

The unspeakably good news of the gospel is that unworthy bankrupt sinners are invited to buy bread without money, to eat a banquet at no cost to them, purchased by Christ crucified who is himself their living bread. The good news is that cripples and invalids who cannot fight have a Champion who fights for them.

Clive Staples Lewis has become one of evangelical Christianity's favorite authors. The popular success of his Narnia books has only served to broaden his appeal. I'm currently introducing Lewis to my sons as we work our way through The Chronicles of Narnia. Over the coming year, I've decided to chronicle my way through a number of other Lewis' works.
